Resident Research Programs

Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets ( CReSIS )

The Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets (CReSIS), a Science and Technology Center led by the University of Kansas, was established as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Science and Technology Center on June 1, 2005. The ultimate goal of CReSIS research is understand and predict the role of large Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets in sea level change. Core partners include Elizabeth City State University, Haskell Indian Nations University, Pennsylvania State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Maine, and four international partners. The Center's mission includes developing technologies, conducting field investigations, compiling and analyzing data to characterize ongoing rapid changes in polar ice sheets, and developing models that explain and predict ice-sheet interactions with climate and sea level. The Center is also dedicated to inspiring students to pursue careers in science and engineering, increasing diversity in science and engineering, and educating the next-generation of scientists and engineers.

Information and Telecommunication Technology Center ( ITTC )

The Information and Telecommunication Technology Center (ITTC) excels in basic research, technology development, and technology transfer.  The Center, located on KU's West campus, has more than 35 faculty and staff researchers and 140 students who develop technologies and advance knowledge in information technology, telecommunications, radar systems and remote sensing.  The Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation (KTEC), private industry, and federal and state programs all support ITTC's activities.

Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory (IGL)

The Isotope Geochemistry Laboratories use radiogenic and non-radiogenic isotopes from several chemical elements to determine ages of geologic events, to determine rates of geologic processes, and to identify and quantify geochemical processes involved in the formation and alteration of geologic materials in the Earth's crust.  This research is applied to study of formation and evolution of continents, to study of sedimentary minerals and fossilized materials which can yield clues to the history of Earth's ancient climates, and to study of active processes related to mountain-building and deformation of Earth's crust.
